Fire safety
It is important that you know what to do if a fire starts. You also need to do what you can to avoid a fire in your home.
If a fire starts - rescue, warn, alert, extinguish
- Save yourself and others around you.
- Contain the fire by closing doors behind you. This also prevents the dangerous smoke from spreading.
- Warn those in danger.
- Call 112 and alert the emergency services. They will ask you:
- what has happened?
- what address you are calling from?
- what phone number you are calling from?
- Extinguish the fire if possible.
Fire and smoke in stairwells
- Never go out into a smoke-filled stairwell. The smoke is dangerous.
- Stay in the apartment and call 112. The emergency services will help you out.
- Keep the building's escape routes clear. Do not store prams, bicycles or other items in stairwells or basements.
How you can prevent a fire
Your apartment must have a smoke alarm. It is very important that you do not take it down.
Check that the smoke alarm is working from time to time. Test it by pressing the test button and try the alarm signal. Change the battery and clean it often by vacuuming and wiping the outside. If you don't have a smoke alarm or need help, contact SHIS staff.
